THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME

From Walnut Grove to Twin Chimneys

The land was once part of Judge Barton Bates’s Walnut Grove estate. Around 1835 he built a 22-room mansion called “Cheneaux,” or “Little Oaks.” Set on the area’s highest point, its two tall stone chimneys rose above the trees as a landmark—the inspiration for today’s community name.

Nearby Old Rock Church was built in 1868 from limestone quarried along Dardenne Creek on land donated by Judge and Mrs. Bates.
